All About Iron
Iron Biochemistry
Many know it's a component of hemoglobin, and is therefore essential for the delivery of oxygen.
It's part of cytochromes in the electron-transport chain and plays a role in mitochondrial energy production.
Iron is required for the synthesis of thyroid hormone.
It's also needed for the conversion of tyrosine to dopamine.
Lastly, iron plays a role in immune function.
Because of its above roles, we always screen our Edmonton patients with fatigue for iron deficiency.
Iron Absorption
Heme iron (found in meat, poultry, and fish) is well absorbed, a 15–35% absorption rate.
Nonheme iron (from plant foods and in supplements) has 2–20% absorption.
Also, nonheme iron is inhibited by substances in plant foods like phytates and polyphenols.
Vitamin C enhances the absorption of nonheme iron.
Stomach acid is needed to transform ferric (Fe2+) iron to ferrous (Fe3+) iron.
We work with a number of highly absorbable forms of iron therapy at our Edmonton office.

Measuring Iron Levels
No one test provides perfectly reliable information about iron status.
In most cases, a combination of tests gives a more accurate picture than does any single test.
Ferritin levels are the main measurement we use for iron status.
Serum iron (as well as saturation index and TIBC) are also helpful.
Complete blood count (with attention to hemoglobin and MCV) are also beneficial.
The practitioners at TruMed work with all of these tests but rely mostly on ferritin levels.
Iron Deficiency Therapy
Most patients are treated with OTC irοո because it is generally effective, and inexpensive.
However, up to 70 percent of patients report gastrointestinal side effects from standard iron.
In our Edmonton patients we frequently see regular iron ineffective in rectifying low levels.
Our practitioners will discuss what iron options are most suitable for your case.

Iron Infusions in EdmontonTruMed has been proudly offering IV therapy in Edmonton since 2010.
Some patients refer to this as an iron transfusion - but it's actually an iron infusion.IV Iron can dramatically increase ferritin levels - it is common to see ferritin rise by 100 to 200 points after single infusion.
There are two types of iron transfusions that are available in Canada and therefore Edmonton
Mono ferric is the most commonly administered injectable iron. Veno fer in Canada is almost exclusively used in pregnancy.
Generally speaking, we dose IV Iron (mono ferric) at 500-1000mg per dose based off of your original ferritin level as well as hemoglobin level. For iron infusions, we use the Ganzoni formula to choose the dose range for our Edmonton patients. We do not do Iron Infusions in patients with Thalassemia unless there is a documented low ferritin as well as males under the age of 18.
Iron Therapy FAQ Iron Infusions in Edmonton – Your Questions AnsweredThinking about booking an iron infusion in Edmonton? You’ve come to the right place. At our IV therapy clinic, we specialize in delivering advanced nutrient therapies — and iron infusions are one of our most in-demand treatments. Here’s everything you need to know: How Do Iron Infusions Work?Great question — let’s get a little science-y. Unlike iron pills that have to pass through your gut (and can often cause digestive issues), IV iron infusions skip the stomach entirely. That means better absorption, faster results, and no gastrointestinal drama. Here’s the breakdown: We use an iron–carbohydrate complex that’s delivered directly into your bloodstream. Once there, specialized immune cells called macrophages grab the complex, break it down, and release the iron.
It’s efficient, targeted, and clinically effective — which is why it’s our go-to solution for iron deficiency anemia. What Do Iron Infusions Cost in Edmonton? The total cost of the actual iron can range from $300 to $600, depending on the dose and type of iron used. Here’s a quick breakdown:
???? Pro Tip: Many insurance plans and health benefits will cover part (or all!) of the cost of the iron itself — we’ll help guide you through the process. Do I Need a Consultation First?Yes — but it’s quick and easy! Before your iron IV therapy, we offer a complimentary 15-minute consultation at our Edmonton clinic. We’ll review your bloodwork (typically ferritin, hemoglobin, and CBC), determine if you’re a good candidate, and choose the right iron type and dose for you. Most patients can book this consultation within a week. How Soon Can I Get an Iron Infusion? We get it — when you're low in iron, you want to feel better fast. At our Edmonton IV clinic, we can typically schedule your iron infusion within 1 to 2 weeks of your consultation. We aim for efficiency without cutting corners on safety or care. How Often Do I Need an Iron Infusion? It depends on your levels! We base your treatment plan on your ferritin and hemoglobin at baseline.
After your initial treatment, we’ll send you for follow-up bloodwork about 4 weeks later to monitor your response and determine if more iron is needed. Are Iron Infusions Safe?Absolutely — when done properly, iron infusions are very safe. At our clinic in Edmonton, we use carefully calculated doses, proper dilutions, and slow infusion rates to minimize side effects. Most people feel great after their session, but a small percentage (about 5%) might experience:
⚠️ Severe reactions like anaphylaxis are extremely rare — roughly 1 in 25,000 infusions (0.004%). We’re fully equipped to monitor and manage any response during your visit.
