Normally 97% of the oxygen is the blood is combined with hemoglobin and only 3% is dissolved in the plasma. 

With pressures provided by hospital grade Monoplace Hyperbaric Chambers, like the ones we have at TruMed, we can increase the oxygen in the plasma up to 20x their normal levels. 

The dissolved Oxygen in the plasma equilibrates with and dramatically increases the Oxygen content in tissues to enhance tissue metabolism and therefore tissue healing. 

HBOT is effective in increasing oxygen to areas and wounds that have poor blood supply or that are injured and/or swollen. The body is able to speed up the healing process at sites of injury including bone, muscle, soft tissues, brain, spinal cord and more.

In particular, with regards to treatment of injury to the brain (Traumatic Brain Injury, Stroke, MS, Concussion) additional oxygenation is needed to supersede the high levels of oxygen already required for normal brain metabolism.

What is Hyperbaric Oxygen ?

Hyperbaric Oxygen is the medical use of 100% oxygen at precisely increased atmospheric pressure. Most Hyperbaric Treatments are between 1.5 and 2.0 atmospheres of pressure, typically referred to as “diving”, as the pressure change closely approximates scuba diving.

How does Hyperbaric Oxygen Work?

This increased pressure provides more oxygen to the body than is possible under normal atmospheric conditions.  The increase of pressure dissolves more oxygen into body tissue and blood so that the body is saturated with more oxygen than normal to enhance healing.

How many Hyperbaric Treatments do I need?

The length and frequency of Hyperbaric Oxygen Treatments will be individualized for you and your condition and will be scheduled with your other treatments. For most conditions, patients are treated once a day - scheduled Monday through Friday at our Edmonton Clinic. For treatment of Stroke, Brain Injury and Concussion (most common conditions treated), the effects are gradual and 20 - 40 treatments may be required.

What will I feel during the Hyperbaric Oxygen Treatment?

As the Hyperbaric chamber pressurizes with Oxygen, you will definitely feel a fullness in your ears (similar to when you going up and down a mountain) as your eardrums adjust. You will have to "crack" your ears to balance the pressure. The chamber temperature tends to increase as pressurization occurs and cools as depressurization occurs.

For your safety during long, high pressure procedures, you may also have to wear a mask for medical grade air for what are called “air breaks,” which are more commonly used in the treatment of wounds and musculoskeletal injury. Whereas, treatment of Concussion, Stroke and Brain Injury generally uses lower pressures and does not need "air breaks."

How soon can someone start to feel better from HBOT?

As a rule of thumb, around 20 Hyperbaric Oxygen sessions are needed before new blood vessels start to grow 'angiogenesis" and for appreciable healing to begin especially in chronic conditions. With that said, everyone and their conditions are individual and initial improvements can certainly happen much sooner especially when Hyperbaric Treatment is combined with IV Therapy .

What's in the IVs? 

Our Naturopathic doctors use custom IV blends using professionally compounded Vitamins, Minerals, Amino Acids, and Anti-oxidants. 

Our standard "Myers' Cocktail" has B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B12, Magnesium and Vitamin C. 

Biochemically speaking, Vitamin IVs are frequently synergistic with Hyperbaric Oxygen because of the synergistic effect of the Myers' on the Krebs Cycle and Hyperbaric adding Oxygen in the electron transport chain for energy production or by increasing oxidative end products for IVs like IV Vitamin C. 

NAD+ IV is a main player at our Edmonton Clinic for the treatment of stroke.

Glutathione IV is a main consideration in the treatment of Concussion & Brain Injury.

How does IV Therapy work? 

IV Therapy places nutrients directly into the blood stream which provides massively elevated blood concentrations and cells are "flooded" with nutrients. This allows for restoration of proper metabolic function as well as specific pharmacologic functionality of nutrients when their levels reach certain quantities that are typically not possible with oral supplementation. 

IV Therapy allows for higher brain levels of nutrients which has particular applicability in the alternative treatment of Concussion, Brain Injury and Stroke at our Edmonton Clinic.

Do I need a consultation before trying an IV? 

 At TruMed we take safety seriously: all new IV patients require a consult before starting IV Therapy . However, the initial IV Therapy consultation with one of our Naturopaths Doctor is complimentary.

How often do you get an IV?

How often you need an IV depends on what health concerns we're trying to address. For instance, for Fatigue, our Naturopaths typically administer one IV per week for 3-4 weeks back to back, to achieve sustained levels. Booster treatments are recommended every 4-8 weeks to maintain effect. 

How quickly does IV Therapy work?

IV Treatments can work really quickly. For mood and cognitive enhancement, many see positive effects within 24 hours and effects are similar for fatigue. Occasionally effects are felt faster or in some patients its takes a few IV Treatments to "get going," 

Can I do both Hyperbaric Oxygen and IV Therapy ?

IV Therapy treatments can be given both before or after Hyperbaric Oxygen and theoretically give an enhanced effect. In conditions involving the brain (TBI, Stroke, Concussion, MS) the two are almost always concurrently administered treatments.

Brain Injury, Concussion, MS & Stroke frequently need up to 40 treatments so these can become expensive to do appropriate treatment protocols.

What training do TruMed's Naturopathic Doctors have?

All Naturopathic doctors in Edmonton and Alberta have a ton of training: everyone has a four year Naturopathic doctorate (after undergraduate and premed studies) a minimum of 7 years post secondary. 

Can Naturopaths in Edmonton prescribe?

Although Naturopaths have mandatory pharmacology training, unfortunately, Alberta Naturopaths don't prescribe. But our Naturopaths have relationships with some Edmonton allied prescribers that we refer our patients to.
